On the 22nd of April 2015, the Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES) signed an agreement with the State Regional Development Agency on implementation of the project „Enhancing Society’s Understanding about Climate Change Effects on Lakes in Latvia” co-funded by European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism.
Over the last decades climate changes have significantly altered Latvia’s lakes. One of the biggest concerns is blue green algae blooming. The end of the blooming period leaves behind toxic elements that are poisonous for the ecosystem, including consumable fish products. As part of the project, IES aims to investigate the impact of intensive blue green algae blooming on the demonstration lakes’ ecosystem functioning, stability and biodiversity.
IES will enhance society’s understanding of climate change effects on ecosystems of local lakes by informing local municipalities and different social groups on the progress and outcomes of the project.
The Project will take place from the 22nd of April 2015 till the 30th of April 2016. IES is the principle contractor and the project will be implemented in cooperation with the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology.
