Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich – newest member of the Copernicus satellites launched

On 21st of November, the Copernicus satellite Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich was successfully launched, joining the other 7 Copernicus Sentinel satellite fleet in orbit.


The Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will provide highly accurate sea level measurements and ensure that climate records are updated for decades to come. Satellite was successfully launched, thanks to a cooperation between Europe and United States of America (USA). The cooperation involved the following organisations: European Space Agency, European Commission, European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), USA National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), SpaceX etc.

Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich is the first of three upcoming additions to the Sentinel Earth observation satellite fleet. Sentinel-1A was the first satellite that entered Earth orbit in 2014. The total fleet of 20 Sentinel satellites are scheduled to be deployed in orbit by 2030. In the nearest future European Space Agency is planning to launch two additional missions – Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5. Both will provide data for more precise climate monitoring and air quality forecasts.

Copernicus is the World’s largest and most ambitious Earth observation programme. It provides accurate, timely and easily accessible information to improve the management of the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security. Since 2017, the Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES) is a member and Latvia’s representative of Copernicus Relay and Academy networks. IES explains possibilities offered by the Copernicus program for national, business and public needs, organise training and information activities. Since 2015 IES in cooperation with European Space Agency is using Copernicus satellite data for assessment, analysis and forecasts of different environmental and natural resources.
