The winner of the young artists competition Baltic Sea Savers has announced

The winner of the international young artists competition Baltic Sea Saver is Jete Jakovica from the Cēsis Art School in Latvia. She created the artwork which is dedicated to the endangered Harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena L.) who lives in the Baltic Sea.

Initially, Jete’s artwork won the Latvian selection, then it was directed to the international contest to compete with the artworks that was made by young artists from Estonia, Sweden, Finland and Åland. For the win of Latvian competition the winner will receive two tickets for flight over the Baltic Sea with the Cessna aircraft, which is provided by the Institute for Environmental Solutions. Furthermore, for the victory of international contest she will receive the ticket to the music festival.

The task of the competition was to create the artwork with a short message about the Baltic Sea and then publish on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using hashtag #BSS, as well as #BSSEE in Estonia, #BSSLV in Latvia, #BSSSE in Sweden, #BSSFI in Finland and #BSS ÅL in Åland. Overall, Latvia was represented by 13 artworks, paying the attention to the ecological issues in the Baltic Sea – eutrophication, pollution, extinction of species; as well as potential solutions for the ecological status improvement.

The art competition Baltic Sea Savers was a part of the project “Pilot watersheads as a practical tool to reduce the harmful inflows into the Baltic Sea” (Acronym – WATERCHAIN) No CB50. It is financially supported by the ERDF Central Baltic Interreg IV Programme 2014 – 2020 and co-funded by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia.
